Domestic gas strategy released

The Australian Government has released their Domestic Gas Strategy, which aims to aid the development of coal seam gas, shale gas and tight gas resources by providing a framework based on comprehensive scientific data and expertise.

The Domestic Gas Strategy will build upon the government’s Energy White Paper, which identifies the onshore gas industry as an important energy source for Australia and for export.

“Australia is an energy superpower and some of our most significant opportunities for growth will come from our onshore gas assets,” Minister for Industry and Science, Ian Macfarlane said.

“Greater understanding of the importance of gas development is essential to help underpin Australia’s future national economic well being.”

“We also expect industry to take responsibility for its own future. This means being involved in meaningful and proactive engagement with communities and acting to understand and mitigate unwanted environmental or social impacts of its activities.

“The Domestic Gas Strategy will support discussions with State Governments, who have the primary responsibility for onshore gas development, and inform the work of the COAG Energy Council on ways to address unnecessary barriers to bringing on new gas supply.

APPEA Acting Chief Executive, Paul Fennelly, is in favour of the strategy, stating that, “unconventional gas, including natural gas from coal seams, accounts for 40 per cent of production in the eastern Australian gas market.”

“It contributes significantly to our export market as Australia remains on track to be the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the end of the decade.”

Australian Pipelines and Gas Association’s Chief Executive, Cheryl Cartwright also agrees that the Federal Government’s plan to improve community understanding and acceptance of coal seam gas and other unconventional gas development is a step in the right direction.

“By providing information to communities and other stakeholders about the benefits of natural gas and the safety and value of unconventional gas, the Government will help to increase opportunities to supply gas for Australia’s domestic market,” said Ms. Cartwright.
