$20 million wastewater scheme launched

The $20 million Cowan Wastewater Scheme has been officially launched by NSW Minister for Finance and Services Andrew Constance and Member for Hornsby Matt Kean.

The pair joined local resident, Hugh Roberts, at his Cowan property which will be the first to be connected to the new system.

Minister Constance said the scheme has been delivered on budget and about six months ahead of schedule.

“This investment is an example of the NSW Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the state, and I congratulate Sydney Water for their excellent work delivering this wastewater scheme to the residents of Cowan so quickly,” Mr Constance said.

“With around 220 connections to be available, residents will be able to enjoy the benefits of their new wastewater system, rather than having to rely on septic tanks and a pump-out service.”

Mr Kean said the local community has spent years campaigning for a wastewater connection.

“By connecting, residents can save hundreds of dollars, help reduce odours and eliminate dampness and seepage on their properties that can be caused by on-site systems,” Mr Kean said

“Information kits are now available for eligible customers and I encourage residents to talk to their plumbers and arrange connection as soon as possible.”

The Cowan Wastewater Scheme is a pressure sewerage system which includes a 3.4km pipeline along the Pacific Highway. Once connected, wastewater will be collected in a small tank installed on each property, then transferred to the Hornsby Heights Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment.

The scheme was delivered by an alliance between Sydney Water, MWH Australia Pty Ltd, John Holland Group Pty Ltd, United Group Infrastructure Ltd and RPS Australia Asia Pacific.

The Cowan Wastewater Scheme is part of the $170 million Priority Sewerage Program to deliver improved wastewater services to six village areas by 30 June 2014.
