The winner of the annual Ixom 2021 Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia competition has been announced, with the competition hosted by WIOA with support from TasWater.

New South Wales’ Casino Water Treatment Plant has been crowned the winner with SA Water’s Anstey Hill Water Treatment Plant narrowly missing out on claiming the title.

The Casino sample will travel to the US to represent Australia at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition.

The competition was streamed online via Zoom and Facebook with the judging panel in Hobart, the home state of last year’s winner; the Rossarden Water Treatment Plant.

State representatives that competed for the ultimate prize:

  • ACT/NSW – Richmond Valley Council – Casino Water Treatment Plant
  • SA – SA Water /SUEZ – Anstey Hill Water Treatment Plant
  • WA – Water Corporation – Wyndham Water Treatment Plant
  • VIC – Westernport Water – Ian Bartlett Water Purification Plant
  • TAS – TasWater – Rocky CreekWater Treatment Plant
  • QLD – Mackay Regional Council – Marian Water Treatment Plant

As part of the annual event, six samples from water treatment facilities across Australia were tasted by an expert panel, with samples assessed on the key criteria of colour, clarity, odour and ‘mouthfeel’.

WIOA Chief Operations Officer, Craig Mathisen, said the competition was a terrific success.

“We use the national competition to let people know the great work that is going on in local communities around Australia and help shape and secure Australia’s water future,” Mr Stallan said.

“Many of us turn on the tap for a drink of water, to cook or take a shower and give little thought to what it takes to operate and maintain the water infrastructure.

“Many members of the public would be surprised by the complexity and hard work that goes into delivering household water.”
