Humphrey Pump big thumperFans of historical pumps can visit the Cobdogla Irrigation Museum in South Australia’s Riverland to see the Humphrey Pump, also known as the Big Thumper.

The Humphrey Pump is demonstrated 4 times a year. It was invented by Mr H A Humphrey and is an internal combustion pump.

The two pumps at Cobdogla, placed adjacent to each other on a common foundation, provided irrigation water for the Cobdogla Irrigation Area for 40 years until 1965. Only one pump was used at a time, the other pump acting as a standby.

Other attractions at the museum include a Lister stationary steam engine.

Information and opening times is available from the museum’s website.
