Fans of historical pumps can visit the Cobdogla Irrigation Museum in South Australia’s Riverland to see the Humphrey Pump, also known as the Big Thumper.
The Humphrey Pump is demonstrated 4 times a year. It was invented by Mr H A Humphrey and is an internal combustion pump.
The two pumps at Cobdogla, placed adjacent to each other on a common foundation, provided irrigation water for the Cobdogla Irrigation Area for 40 years until 1965. Only one pump was used at a time, the other pump acting as a standby.
Other attractions at the museum include a Lister stationary steam engine.
Information and opening times is available from the museum’s website.
