Maintaining equipment health and efficiency is critical to minimising downtime and maximising productivity. Traditional monitoring and maintenance methods, particularly pumps, can be labour-intensive and reactive, often leading to costly repairs and unexpected operational halts.

Chesterton ConnectTM is designed to streamline equipment and process monitoring through a robust and intuitive system. Leveraging Bluetooth® technology and a rugged design, the system allows for real-time monitoring of critical parameters such as equipment vibration, surface temperature, process temperature and process pressure.

The Chesterton ConnectTM system is easy to install and integrates seamlessly with a mobile app that provides a user-friendly interface for accessing and analysing data. Users can comprehensively view the health of their plant’s equipment by connecting multiple sensors.

The system’s alert mechanism, including mobile app notifications and an in-unit LED display, enables early detection of undesirable events. This proactive approach helps better resource allocation and minimises the risk of unplanned downtime and asset failure. In addition, data exported from the system can be analysed to gain deeper insights into equipment operation and to implement preventative measures.

Monitor and Analyse Equipment Health from Wherever You Are

Chesterton ConnectTM is highly versatile, designed to be used across various rotating equipment including pumps, mixers, agitators and more. Its key features include:

  • Easy installation and configuration
  • Early detection of process instabilities
  • Simplified maintenance prioritisation
  • Secure data access
  • View multiple sensors in one mobile app
The pump uses a Chesterton 442 split mechanical seal with a dial indicator for axial movement measurement and a Chesterton Connect™ Sensor to monitor stuffing box pressure.

Users can receive email or app alerts from any internet-connected computer, automated reports, and detailed data graphs. This remote monitoring capability enhances decision-making by providing real-time insights into equipment performance and enabling early identification of potential issues.

The system’s cloud dashboard displays real-time measurements and allows for continuous correlation between different data points. Users can compare multiple pieces of equipment, gaining a clearer understanding of their overall operational status and making informed decisions based on comprehensive data analysis.

One of the standout features of Chesterton ConnectTM is its scalability. The system’s plug-and-play design ensures a smooth integration between sensors and the cloud, supporting 24/7 remote condition monitoring. This scalability is crucial for expanding monitoring capabilities across various plant equipment without compromising on efficiency or security.

The system also enables monitoring of equipment in hard-to-reach and hazardous areas, reducing the need for personnel to work in potentially dangerous conditions and enhancing overall plant safety.

Case Study: Chesterton ConnectTM Addresses Pump Maintenance Challenges in the Wastewater Industry

A real-world example of the system’s effectiveness is its application in the wastewater industry. Wastewater facilities often face significant challenges with clogging in their pumps and pipes, particularly due to the use of non-flushable materials like ‘flushable’ wipes. These issues can lead to ragging problems in wet wells, causing pump suction blockages and vibration-induced damage. Repair costs can be substantial, averaging between $18,000 and $35,000 per pump.

To combat these challenges, Chesterton collaborated with a wastewater facility to implement the Chesterton ConnectTM system. Chesterton ConnectTM Sensors and a Gateway were installed on the discharge piping of the facility’s submersible pumps. This remote monitoring setup detected excessive vibration levels indicative of clogging, sending automatic email and app alerts to plant personnel.

The results were impressive:

  • Increased Reliability: The system provided early warnings of rising vibration levels as pumps became clogged, allowing maintenance crews to address ragging issues promptly and avoid severe pump damage.
  • Cost Savings: By mitigating issues before they led to extensive damage, the facility avoided expensive pump rebuilds, significantly cutting repair costs.
  • Reduced Downtime: The ability to act swiftly on vibration alerts minimised downtime, ensuring that pumps returned to normal operation quickly.
