One of Melbourne’s fastest-growing corridors will benefit from critical upgrades to drinking water, recycled water and sewer mains.
The works are being carried out to ensure water security for new housing and essential services in Pakenham East, with 12km of pipe works being constructed, as well as trenching, pipe installation and tunnelling works.
Around 7000 new homes are being built in this fast-growing suburb, as well as schools, community hubs and businesses to support population growth.
“With rapid growth across residential and non-residential developments, we’re working closely with our partners to deliver water services, including much-needed recycled water infrastructure,” South East Water general manager – liveable water solutions Charlie Littlefair said.
“In a drying climate, expanding our recycled water network across Melbourne is important to securing long-term water supplies for homes, businesses and green spaces.”
South East Water is investing $2.1 billion between 2023 and 2028 to support population growth, climate adaptation and regulatory compliance across the catchment. More than 14,700km of water pipes, 1500km of recycled water pipes and 11,600km of sewer pipes have been built across 2024–25 to support this.
The utility will continue the Pakenham East works until mid-2026.
In early October, South East Water announced it had commenced major sewer upgrades in Clyde, Melbourne, with investigative works underway at the Ballarto Road pump station and Ballarto Road rising sewer main.
This is being carried out in partnership with industry partners Abergeldie, BMD, KBR (ABK); and Beca, Fulton Hogan, and Interflow (BFHI).
