Bechtel, downstream contractor for Santos GLNG, has announced that the first of six gas turbine generators at the LNG plant on Curtis Island, QLD has become operational.
The gas turbine generator (GTG) has produced power to the site, a critical step toward LNG production. While the GTGs vary in size, each will be able to produce about 12 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to the electricity used to power 11,000 homes. GTGs will eventually supply electricity for the entire plant, ensuring that the power supply used in the local communities is not affected.
“Our recent milestones – bringing gas onto site, lighting the flare and firing the first GTG – are key steps to the successful start of LNG production on the project. This remarkable progress is the result of hard work from our team and a great level of coordination with our customer, Santos GLNG,” said Alasdair Cathcart, Bechtel’s global LNG general manager.
“2015 is a critical year for our Curtis Island construction teams implementing an unprecedented program that will have all three plants producing LNG, including the second train on Queensland Curtis LNG.”
