Dee River water main replacement complete

A damaged water main crossing the Dee River, Mount Morgan has successfully been replaced by Fitzroy River Water (FRW), and the temporary by-pass pumping system that was set up is no longer needed.

Council’s Water Committee Chair, Councillor Greg Belz said the replacement was well planned and executed by FRW staff.

“The planned work saw reinstatement of a damaged water main between Dublin Lane and Usher Street, Mount Morgan,” Cr Belz said.

“Damage was caused to the water main during the Ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald rain event earlier this year,” he said.

Cr Belz said a number of options were considered in order to replace the water main including under-boring and trenching.

“The trenching method was the preferred option, which saved FRW more than $20,000, and utilised the same trench from the existing water main,” Cr Belz said.

“An innovative temporary river water by-pass pumping system was put in place to ensure the construction site remained dry.

“I commend FRW for executing such a well thought out planned maintenance project and ensuring the supply of quality drinking water to nearby residents was not affected,” he said,

Works commenced on Tuesday 7 May with the water main returning to operation on Friday 17 May.

All reinstatements will be completed this week reaching a total approximate project cost of $60,000.
