The Western Australian State Government has completed an upgrade to the Denham water treatment plant. The upgrade is part of a $7.8million suite of projects to improve the town’s water supply scheme.

WA Water Minister, Mia Davies, has said the $3.8million upgrade to the water treatment plant increased the water available for the town by around 33 percent.

“The upgrade to the water treatment plant increased its capacity from 865,000 litres per day to 1.15million litres per day, securing water supplies for the town particularly in peak tourist periods,” Ms Davies said.

“The Water Corporation installed a new pump station and infiltration pond, as well as completing mechanical and electrical upgrades, and modifications to existing infrastructure to increase flow capacity.

“These upgrades provide a foundation for the second stage of work, which includes the installation of a 200,000 litre elevated storage tank.”

The Minister said the $4million elevated storage tank was in the process of being designed. The tank will feature a unique design, segmented to hold both 100,000 litres of drinking water and fit-for-purpose water.

“Denham’s water supply scheme is quite unique, as it includes a dual reticulation system, which provides both drinking and fit-for purpose water to the community through two sets of pipes,” she said.

“Work on the tank is expected to begin mid-2015 and be completed by the end of the year.”

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Water and North West Central MLA, Vince Catania, welcomed the Minister’s announcement.

“The suite of upgrades to the Denham water supply scheme will provide a more secure, long-term water supply for customers. The upgrades also cater for the increased demand experienced during the peak holiday seasons with visitors to both Denham and Monkey Mia,” Ms Davies said.
