A mechanical seal is a method of containing fluid within a pump where a rotating shaft passes through a stationary housing or occasionally, where the housing rotates around the shaft. Mechanical seals are typically used for pressures up to 1000 psi and have the added feature of providing more positive sealing during shutdown.
