Seals are required to prevent unwanted leakage to the pump’s surroundings around the pump shaft. There are many different seal types, from basic packing, to rubber rings, to more complex components. Many pump systems now employ mechanical seals consisting of a rotating and stationary part. Seal performance greatly influences pump performance and seal failure is a common cause of pump downtime. As a result, correct seal choice is a vital consideration in designing any pump system.
