Generally, valves are used in pumping systems to restrict fluid motion to the desired direction. Valves are used to prevent fluid return at the discharge end of a pumping system and can be employed to enable the isolation of sections of a pipe system for maintenance or to release excess pressure from a system. A wide range of different types of valves types exist for different applications. Some commonly used valve types include gate valves, rotary ball valves, plug valves, diaphragm valves, butterfly valves, globe valves, needle valves, pinch valves and squeeze valves.
