Scaling and clogging are ongoing challenges in many industrial pumping applications, especially when dealing with crystallising or carbonate-rich media. A recent installation of Valmet’s Flowrox peristaltic pumps has shown how smart design can overcome these issues and boost process uptime.
In this demanding application, a site experienced repeated failures with centrifugal pumps due to heavy scaling caused by carbonates in spill process water. The solution came in the form of Flowrox LPP-T peristaltic pumps, which use a single rolling rotor design. This compresses the hose only once with each rotation, effectively removing scaling from the hose walls and keeping flow consistent.
Unlike conventional pumps, Flowrox hose pumps have no metal parts in contact with the media. The rubber hose is the only wetted component, making it highly resistant to scaling and corrosion. This not only improves reliability but also makes maintenance simpler.
The pump’s performance exceeded customer’s expectations. It ran continuously 24/7 for over 120 days without any leakage, and the hose remained in good condition well beyond its expected service life. The pump also successfully emptied a 3m-deep tank located beneath the pump’s location – an operation that had previously challenged other pump types.
Installed outdoors in harsh winter conditions, the Flowrox pump kept running smoothly even at temperatures as low as -15°C. Its robust design and ground-level access also improved safety and ease of servicing for maintenance crews.
Following the success of the initial installation, the site expanded its use of Flowrox pumps to other process areas, including chemical applications involving highly corrosive media.
Flowrox peristaltic hose pumps continue to prove their worth in tough environments, offering a reliable, low-maintenance solution for abrasive, corrosive, and scaling-prone applications.
