The first foundation slab for two new clarifiers at the Douglas Water Treatment Plant has been completed, with the clarifiers to enhance the plant’s capacity to produce clean, healthy drinking water for Townsville.
Contractors have poured more than 450 cubic metres of concrete to complete the foundation slab. The new clarifiers represent a $27.5 million investment by Townsville City Council.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chairperson, Russ Cook, said the project was on-track to be completed by the end of the year.
“This project will increase the resilience of the Douglas Water Treatment Plant, improving the ability of Council to modify treatment processes to manage seasonal variations in raw water quality,” Mr Cook said.
“The clarifiers will provide expanded ability to filter raw water from the dam, and reduce algae blooms and high turbidity water impacting the production of high-quality water supply for homes and business across the city.”
Mr Cook said the construction of the new clarifiers was an investment in the city’s future.
“Townsville’s population is expected to reach 200,000 this year and with all the positive developments on the horizon, the city is going to keep growing,” Mr Cook said.
“This investment at Douglas Water Treatment Plant will ensure we can continue to meet the demand for clean, healthy drinking water in Townsville as the city grows.
“This project supports around 40 jobs. It has also resulted in business for local subcontractors and suppliers.”
