The New South Wales Government will provide more than $8 million in funding towards the first stage of the Central Kempsey Wastewater Treatment Works project.
Kempsey Shire Council has secured $8.7 million in funding to transition the existing, aged waste-disposal system over to best-practice and latest technology treatment works.
Mayor, Liz Campbell, said the funding would give Kempsey a modern, safe and secure sewerage service.
“This funding will assist council in moving forward with this longstanding project to replace a treatment plant that has been there since 1938,” Ms Campbell said.
“The current system regularly smells, is inundated by flooding and has limited spare capacity.
“The new treatment plant will be flood-free, include innovative wastewater treatment technology, reduce smells and odours, and accommodate future growth in our shire.”
The project, which will be undertaken over three stages, will see the consolidation of three sewerage schemes – South Kempsey, West Kempsey and Frederickton – and is valued at $50 million.
