Gas flows on the DBNGP

Record gas delivery to the Perth and Pilbara regions has been achieved on the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline, following unprecedented demand for gas power generation in the metropolitan area.

On January 28 2015, DBNGP delivered 810 terajoules (TJ) to customers in Perth and the South West, representing the largest throughput figure since the pipeline was commissioned nearly 30 years ago.

Record deliveries were also achieved across the entire pipeline, with a total of 1,131TJ delivered to all of DBP customers throughout Western Australia.

These record deliveries were fuelled by heightened demand for gas-fired power generation due to the unavailability of coal-fired power stations and unseasonably low wind-farm power generation.

The new record eclipsed the previous highest throughput delivery to the Perth region of 807 TJ that was achieved in July 2014. By way of context, 1TJ gas is enough to supply the average family home for 50 years.

According to CEO Stuart Johnston, the record delivery demonstrates the importance of the DBNGP as Western Australia’s most strategically significant energy infrastructure asset.

“We’re really pleased that the DBNGP continues to meet demand of our customers, and has further capacity to transport full-haul throughput of up to 845 TJ/day if required,” Mr Johnston said.

“On this occasion were able to shift from standard delivery to almost full-haul capacity overnight, which shows the importance and versatility of the DBNGP in helping meet the energy supply needs of Western Australia.”

“The DBNGP stands well placed to continue to meet the demand of the South West during the hot spell forecast for the next few days,” Mr Johnston said.

“The record figures demonstrate the benefits of DBP’s continued investment in the pipeline’s expansion since 2004 and reinforces the importance of ongoing investment into the future.”
