Geraldton’s largest water valve gets a makeover

Western Australia’s Geraldton has received a mammoth upgrade with Water Corporation successfully replacing one of the oldest and largest water valves in the area as part of essential work to upgrade the local water supply scheme.

Significant excavation and heavy lifting equipment was required to unearth the cast-iron valve, known as ‘John’, which was installed in 1952 and weighed over 50 tonnes.

Water Corporation Mid West Regional Manager, Steve Greeve, said Water Corporation had invested $800,000 as part of its 2018-19 program to upgrade Geraldton’s critical valve network.

“Valves are essential to Geraldton’s water supply infrastructure as they allow us to isolate or redirect the flow of water through pipes while we carry out repairs or undertake upgrades,” Mr Greeve said.

“This work will allow us to continue to maintain the reliability of the water supply scheme in Geraldton for decades to come.”

Crews worked throughout the night on 13 July to replace the giant valve in Utakarra to minimise as much impact to the local community as possible.

“The sheer size of this valve meant replacing it was a very complex task, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in planning and carrying out work successfully,” Mr Greeve said.

“I would also like to thank the Geraldton community for their patience and understanding while we completed this essential work.”

Last year, Water Corporation replaced 80 valves in Geraldton and installed an additional 15 hydrants.
