The six finalists for the 2014 Golden Gecko Award, which celebrate environmental excellence in the WA mining industry, have been announced.
The nominees include a project which significantly reduced greenhouse emissions at a diamond mine by increasing the efficiency and maximising the use of renewable energy in both normal mining operations and the seasonal dewatering process.
Argyle Diamonds have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 23,300tCO2-e per year at the Argyle Diamond Mine. This was achieved through a 30{87a03eb4327cd2ba79570dbcca4066c6d479b8f7279bafdb318e7183d82771cf} reduction of hydro power usage and a 21{87a03eb4327cd2ba79570dbcca4066c6d479b8f7279bafdb318e7183d82771cf} decrease of onsite diesel consumption.
The Prestigious Golden Gecko Awards showcase companies which are leading the industry with innovative environmental practices and demonstrating strong leadership in environmental excellence.
WA Department of Mines and Petroleum Environment Division Executive Director Dr Phil Gorey said the award entries are assessed against specific criteria by a panel of environmental officers from various government agencies.
“To receive a Golden Gecko award, nominees must excel across four criteria,” Dr Gorey said.
“These are a commitment to environmental excellence, achieving excellent environmental outcomes, community engagement and what makes the project special.
“Regardless of who receives an award, all six companies have shown a commitment to Western Australia’s unique environment.”
