New South Wales’ Goulburn Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade is on track to be completed by March 2018.
The project includes over 4.5km of pipelines laid below the ground and over 10km of electrical conduits to support the intensive electrical process and operations of the state-the-art plant.
So far in 2017, 32,000 man hours have been worked as part of the construction with over 2,500 cubic metres of concrete poured – with no lost time due to work injuries.
$10 million was obtained from the Federal Government through the National Stronger Regions Fund for the project, with a further $25 million allocated by Council.
Haslin Constructions was awarded the tender for the upgrade in October 2016 and began construction in December 2016.
The significant upgrade has been driven by the need to meet modern-day environmental standards as well as catering for future population growth, and is expected to be completed in March 2018.
Councillors recently toured the site for an update on the project, and Goulburn’s Mayor, Bob Kirk, was impressed by the progress.
“This is an important infrastructure upgrade for our community and I am impressed by the quality of work by the contractors Haslin and our staff. When completed the treated effluent from the plant will be of such a high quality that it will be used to not only discharge into the Wollondilly River but also as part of our future Goulburn Reuse Scheme.”
The Reuse Scheme will be up and running in 2019, and will provide recycled water to many of Goulburn’s parks, gardens and sporting facilities; a great environmental outcome.
Director of Utilities, Grant Moller, also highlighted the significant boost to the local economy.
“Throughout construction, over $1.5 million has already been spent on local builders, trades, accommodation, plant and equipment. This has been one of Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s biggest ever capital works projects, and to be on time and on budget with around six months to go is a great achievement.”
Haslin Constructions have a long history of delivering wastewater treatment plants across NSW and bring to this project significant experience and expertise. A sod turning event to mark the beginning of the project was held in November 2016, and an official opening following completion is expected to be held in early April 2018.
