Greater Western Water (GWW) has commenced works on the fourth and final stage of a $160 million project to expand Melbourne’s oldest sewer network.
This will see about 750m of underground sewer pipes constructed along Siddeley Street, from Spencer Street and Flinders Lane to Wurundjeri Way, connecting them to the existing network.
New underground sewer pipes have already been installed in Elizabeth Street, Lonsdale Street and Spencer Street as part of GWW’s Melbourne CBD Sewer Strategy – a major investment to strengthen Melbourne’s wastewater infrastructure.
GWW general manager – asset planning and delivery Ian Burton said the sewer expansion was critical to Melbourne’s future needs.
“Melbourne’s underground sewer network has played a crucial role in protecting public health and the environment for the past 120 years,” he said.
“These are vital works designed to strengthen the sewerage system’s capacity and reliability as Melbourne CBD’s population continues to grow and thrive.
“Not only will the completed project double the capacity of the existing sewer network, it will support more dwellings and offices in the CBD for at least another 100 more years.”

Saunders Aqua Metro is carrying the final stage of the project, with works expected to be completed by 2028.
