PIA is inviting industry feedback on the AS ISO/ASME14414 pump energy assessment standard ahead of its scheduled 2025 review.
The Pump Industry Australia (PIA) is calling on professionals across the sector to provide feedback on AS ISO/ASME 14414:2020, a critical standard that guides pump energy assessment for complex systems.
Initially developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), this standard was formally adopted in Australia in 2020 by Standards Australia’s ME-030 Pump Standards Committee. According to Australian regulations, all national standards must be reviewed at least every five years, which will place this standard under formal review in 2025.
Why AS ISO/ASME14414 matters
Unlike performance standards that focus solely on individual pump units, AS ISO/ASME14414:2020 addresses the entire pump system. It provides a framework for assessing the energy performance of integrated pump systems, encompassing pumps, motors, pipework, valves, control systems and other critical components. This is distinct from AS ISO 9906, which governs efficiency testing at the individual pump level.
Optimising energy use across whole systems is a growing priority for both industry and government, particularly in sectors with high energy consumption such as water infrastructure, mining, manufacturing, and HVAC. As the Australian energy landscape continues to shift toward sustainability, system-wide standards like this one are essential tools for reducing lifecycle costs and emissions.
What feedback is being sought?
PIA is now encouraging members, asset managers, consultants, OEMs, and end-users to weigh in on the standard’s relevance, clarity, and practical application. Key questions include:
- Has your organisation used AS ISO/ASME14414:2020 in real-world system assessments?
- Is the current standard sufficient for modern energy auditing needs?
- Would you like to see the standard reconfirmed, revised, or withdrawn?
- Are there aspects of the standard that require localisation for Australian conditions?
Notably, the ISO/ASME edition was reaffirmed internationally in 2024, indicating it remains relevant globally. However, Australian-specific feedback is crucial in guiding the ME-030 Committee’s decision.
How to contribute your views
Comments are due by 8 August 2025 and can be submitted directly to the PIA via email: secretary@pumps.org.au
Submissions can be as simple as a few lines expressing your experience with the standard or more detailed suggestions regarding its applicability or limitations.
Why your input matters
Standards Australia’s voting process is guided by both technical merit and stakeholder consensus. Whether you’re involved in system design, energy efficiency auditing, standards compliance or asset management, this is an opportunity to influence how Australia measures and improves pump system performance.
By participating, you help ensure that the standard remains technically sound, practical, and aligned with local industry needs.
