Thousands of social housing homes in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania will soon receive important energy upgrades. These upgrades will help social housing tenants save money on bills, stay more comfortable, and access the benefits of the energy transition.

The Australian Government is investing $171 million in these upgrades. Victoria will receive $120.3 million to support upgrades for over 8,000 social housing households. South Australia will get $36.1 million to improve approximately 3,500 homes. And Tasmania will get $14.6 million to improve approximately 1,200 homes.

These upgrades will include things like:

  • reverse-cycle air conditioners
  • hot water heat pumps
  • electric appliances
  • solar panels
  • better lighting and insulation.

Many social housing homes were built decades ago. They often don’t meet modern energy standards, which makes them hard to heat or cool and more expensive to run.

These upgrades mean homes will be cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and cheaper to run all year round.

It is important that every Australian has access to cleaner, cheaper energy and homes that are comfortable and affordable to live in.

The upgrades are part of the $500 million Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative Expansion announced in November 2024 to uplift the energy performance of social housing across Australia.
