Pump Industry Australia (PIA) has sent a letter to the Prime Minister and National Cabinet calling for the government to declare the pump sector as an essential service, to ensure pump companies can continue to operate in the event of stricter lockdown measures. The PIA notes that currently the sector is considered an essential service only in NSW, and is seeking this to apply in all states and territories.

As pumps are at the heart of most major services that Australians rely on – from water and wastewater; power generation; liquid distribution including fuel; energy and resources mining; agriculture, farming and food production; pharmaceutical production; fire protection; and building services and HVAC – keeping the sector operating is essential to maintain these services.

The PIA acknowledges the severity of COVID-19, and fully supports the need for tighter controls to prevent further spread of the disease, and is confident its Members and the sector as a whole can continue to operate safely within the restrictions put in place by the government to ensure services the nation requires can continue operating efficiently and reliably.
