Few wastewater treatment plants in Australia operate without the high-performing solutions “engineered in Germany and made in Australia.”

Since 1972, SEEPEX, headquartered in Bottrop, Germany, has been a trusted partner to municipal water and wastewater utilities, delivering innovative and reliable pumping systems. Expanding its global presence, SEEPEX Australia has operated since 2013 from its facility in Tuggerah, NSW, where it assembles pumps and provides comprehensive nationwide support.

The Australian branch offers a robust service network, along with locally available spare parts and maintenance solutions, ensuring reliable and efficient support for customers across the country. With decades of expertise, SEEPEX understands the challenges and stringent environmental standards in wastewater treatment, including neutralisation, filtration, reduction of organic pollutants, and removal of nitrogen and phosphates.

Effective wastewater treatment demands efficient and reliable state-of-the-art technology. SEEPEX specialises in manufacturing progressive cavity pumps that handle sludge and other challenging substances. Thanks to their unique design, these pumps excel at managing highly abrasive and corrosive materials. A steel rotor rotates within an elastomer casing, ensuring the continuous and precise movement of viscous media.

Progressive cavity pumps are the cornerstone of SEEPEX’s product line. They are celebrated for their versatility, precision, and ability to handle a wide range of media, from highly viscous liquids to solids. Their gentle, low-shear pumping action preserves the integrity of shear-sensitive materials while maintaining consistent flow rates and pressure stability.

Beyond the pumps, SEEPEX offers a comprehensive portfolio that includes pumping systems, macerators, and tailored digital solutions. Smart Conveying Technology (SCT) stands out as an innovative solution. Its patented split stator and quick-release rotor design reduce maintenance time by up to 85% and cut costs. This modular design allows for easy servicing access while reducing the pump’s footprint, making it an excellent choice for compact technical environments, particularly brownfield sites with space constraints.

Meeting the Challenges of Sewage Sludge Management

Germany’s sewage treatment sector faces the monumental task of recycling up to two million tons of sewage sludge annually, a challenge compounded by regulatory changes such as amendments to the Sewage Sludge Ordinance (AbfKlärV) and Fertiliser Ordinance (DüMV).

To provide an example closer to home, Australia’s Water Supply, Sewerage, and Drainage Services (WSSDS) industry has managed approximately 2,420 gigalitres of wastewater annually, including substantial volumes of sewage sludge. Adhering to stringent regulatory frameworks, Australia enforces comprehensive biosolids management guidelines emphasising sustainability and environmental safety across states and territories.

To support these efforts, SEEPEX introduced Smart Air Injection, a revolutionary system that uses pulsed compressed air to efficiently transport sewage sludge over long distances. This low-energy, cost-effective solution enhances transport efficiency and provides a sustainable alternative to traditional methods.

“The future belongs to high-performance pumps that are energy-efficient, boost productivity, and are easy to maintain,” emphasises Managing Director SEEPEX Australia Peter Vila.

Tailored Solutions for Diverse Needs

SEEPEX’s extensive product range includes open hopper, metering, and semi-submersible pumps, all customisable to meet specific operational requirements. These products range in size from compact models weighing just 10 kilograms and measuring 500 millimetres (mm) to massive pumps over 11 meters long and weighing up to 7 tons.

Their capabilities are equally diverse, with flow rates ranging from as low as 0.06 litres per hour to an impressive 500 cubic meters per hour. Standard pumps handle pressures up to 48 bar, while high-pressure models can achieve up to 96 bar, ensuring performance across a variety of applications.

Driving Digital Transformation in the Pump Industry

As an early adopter of digital transformation, SEEPEX has set new technological standards in pump manufacturing. The company’s award-winning digital solutions embody Industry 4.0 principles, offering advanced pump monitoring and predictive maintenance systems. These intelligent tools improve system availability, reduce unplanned downtime, and provide actionable insights into pump performance and operational trends.

“The water industry faces enormous challenges,” Mr Vila said. “With our internationally recognised, patented solutions, we’re uniquely positioned to support this sector.”

SEEPEX remains at the forefront of innovation, delivering reliable, energy-efficient pumping systems that meet the evolving demands of wastewater management while setting benchmarks for excellence in the industry.
