Two significant infrastructure projects are advancing at pace for South Gippsland Water, including upgrades at the Lance Creek water treatment plant and Meeniyan wastewater treatment plant.
The installation of a new 4.5-megalitre clear water storage (CWS) tank has been completed at Lance Creek, forming part of South Gippsland Water’s strategy to maintain reliable water services for communities supplied by the Lance Creek system.
Those to benefit from the storage tank include customers in Inverloch, Cape Paterson, Wonthaggi, Korumburra, Poowong, Loch and Nyora, as well as the Kilcoy Abattoir in Lance Creek.
South Gippsland Water managing director Robert Murphy explained the significance of the project.
“This new clear water storage tank is a critical addition to the Lance Creek system and will help ensure we continue delivering reliable water services to our growing communities,” he said.
“Demand across the region continues to increase, particularly during peak periods, and this project will strengthen our ability to maintain service standards for customers now and into the future.”
The project was approved through South Gippsland Water’s 2023 Price Submission, which is focused on ensuring the region’s water infrastructure keeps pace with growth and customer demand.
The $7.8 million project budget included design, development, project management and construction, with key developments including completion of the tank foundation, base, walls, major connecting pipelines and roof structure.
Meeniyan’s upgraded wastewater plant
South Gippsland Water is also continuing upgrades at the Meeniyan wastewater treatment plant, with works focused on improving treatment performance and ensuring the facility can continue to meet future operational and regulatory requirements.
This will involve the installation of a new dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit to support enhanced nutrient removal and overall plant performance.
“Detailed design work (of the treatment plant) is now largely complete, including the full design of the new on-site irrigation system, which will support increased reuse and improved management of treated wastewater,” Murphy said.
“On-ground works are also advancing well, with the access track upgrade completed and civil works now underway to prepare the site for installation of the new dissolved air flotation unit and associated components.”
This project is set for completion at the end of the year.
