In the dynamic landscape of midstream operations, precise measurement is crucial. KROHNE’s Entrained Gas Management (EGM) technology, integrated into their OPTIMASS series of Coriolis mass flowmeters, offers a significant advancement in handling entrained gas within pipelines.

Entrained gas—whether introduced intentionally, as in aerated products, or occurring inadvertently due to factors like leaking pumps or cavitation—has traditionally posed challenges for flow measurement. Conventional Coriolis meters often struggle under these conditions, leading to measurement inaccuracies or operational disruptions.

KROHNE’s EGM technology addresses these issues by employing sophisticated control algorithms that enable continuous measurement across a broad spectrum of gas fractions and complex flow scenarios. Remarkably, these flowmeters maintain functionality even during complete transitions from pure liquid to gas phases and back, ensuring uninterrupted mass flow and density measurements.

For the pump industry, the implications are substantial. The ability to accurately measure flow in the presence of entrained gas enhances process reliability and reduces downtime. This is particularly beneficial during plant start-ups, shutdowns, and troubleshooting, where gas entrainments can otherwise lead to operational delays.

Moreover, the OPTIMASS flowmeters with EGM provide reliable detection and indication of two-phase flows, bolstering safety-critical control functions. This reliability is essential for maintaining the integrity of midstream operations, where undetected leaks or measurement errors can have significant financial and environmental repercussions.

Incorporating KROHNE’s EGM-equipped flowmeters into midstream infrastructure represents a proactive step towards mitigating risks associated with entrained gas. By ensuring accurate and continuous measurements, operators can optimise performance, uphold safety standards, and ultimately protect their bottom line.
