Two new pump stations for VIC

Coliban Water has completed major upgrades to the sewer networks at Huntly and Epsom in Victoria, including 12km of new sewer main and the construction of two new pump stations.

The $8 million project aims to increase the capacity, reliability and efficiency of the sewer network.

Coliban Water Acting Manager Infrastructure Delivery Mick Dunne said the upgrade was necessary to accommodate recent growth in the areas and allow for future growth.

“Huntly and Epsom are growth areas, with new commercial and residential developments,” Mr Dunne said.

“The new sewer main starts at the Viewpoint Estate in Huntly, where we also constructed a sewer pump station to replace the interim pump station.

“The main continues along Rennie Street and Station Street, then crosses the Midland Highway at Allen Street as it makes its way to our Bendigo Water Reclamation Plant in Howard Street Epsom.”

Mr Dunne said the sewer pipeline was constructed using a combination of open trenching and boring which reduced the need for excavation.

“Less excavation means less damage to trees, root systems, waterways, nature strips, gardens and driveways. It also means less disruption to traffic,” Mr Dunne said.

“To cross the Midland Highway we bored for 44m at a depth of 6.5m. Boring was also used to cross under the Bendigo Creek and to prevent damage to native vegetation.”

A new sewer pump station was also constructed at the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve to allow for the decommissioning of three existing pump stations.

“The three decommissioned pump stations were located in areas which had seen an increase in residential properties over the years.

“By replacing three pump stations with one we have improved the efficiency of our system and reduced maintenance costs.”

Mr Dunne said the new pump stations use state-of-the-art pump technology and were designed to provide energy savings of up to 25 per cent.

The project commenced in January 2016 and was completed in June 2016.
