The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is seeking comments on revisions to the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part C: Design and Construction, Section 4: Fire Safety (C4). The changes include some which affect pump requirements.

AMSA is seeking input from stakeholders on issues relating to C4 prior to the preparation of a revised draft standard for public comment. Issues raised will assist in ensuring that the new standard incorporates all concerns.

The pump-related changes include;

  • 3.2.7 Clause 4.7.3.4 for vessels of length less than 25 meters, NSCV requires that a single fire pump not be driven by the main engine in all vessels required to have a fire pump. Proposal to allow certain circumstances where the single fire pump could be engine driven.
  • Clause 4.7.3.6 – change so that it has a positive definition that includes bilge pumps rather than a negative one which excludes them.

AMSA has prepared this discussion paper to assist stakeholders to identify potential issues and to consider possible options. However, submissions can be made without reference to this discussion paper.
