Supporting future growth and development from early 2023, construction has neared completion for a new water treatment plant in the Northern Territory’s remote community of Laramba.
Installation of the treatment plant and ancillary equipment, located on the Napperby Pastoral lease about 35km from Laramba, is nearing completion. Testing and commissioning is currently taking place and operations are expected to begin from early 2023.
The plant uses ion exchange technology to reduce the level of naturally occurring uranium from the groundwater source to below the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines value.
The project is part of the Northern Territory Government’s $28 million program to improve water quality and supply infrastructure to remote communities.
Clean TeQ Water was engaged earlier this year to design and build the treatment plant.
The ion exchange technologies used by Clean TeQ Water are proven to reliably remove targeted minerals while minimising the amount of waste, which makes it very suitable for treatment of groundwater in remote locations.
The Northern Territory’s Minister for Essential Services, Selena Uibo, said improving regional water quality was a priority for the Northern Territory Government.
“The water quality and supply program targets those communities with the most critical need. It also complements ongoing work to support infrastructure upgrades in our remote communities,” Ms Uibo said.
“This new plant lays the foundations to unlock opportunities in the area, such as housing construction, which will enable remote communities to thrive.”
