Northern Beaches Council has welcomed a $1.4m Federal government grant to support the replacement of the gas heating systems at Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Pool (MABC), which will save ratepayers an estimated $500,000 a year.
Currently, gas accounts for approximately 34 per cent of the Council’s carbon emissions, with nearly 90% of this usage at the MABC. The proposed upgrade involves replacing the existing gas pool and domestic water heating systems with energy-efficient electric heat pump systems, significantly reducing the Council’s costs and emissions.
Mayor Sue Heins said, “This project is a win for Council’s budget and the environment.
“The ongoing benefit of this replacement project will drastically reduce our energy bills, saving an estimated $500,000 each year and supporting our commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
“I welcome the support of Minister Chris Bowen and local MP Zali Steggall for their support of this project. By working together across the various tiers of Government, we can support facilities like MABC, which directly benefits our ratepayers and the environment,” Mayor Heins said.
Member for Warringah, Zali Stegall, said, “This is wonderful news. The project will have a dual benefit of reducing the swim centre’s emissions by more than 1,378 tonnes CO2-e each year and will also facilitate welcome cost savings for the Council.”
This project received grant funding from the Australian Governmentt and is part of the Federal Government Community Energy Upgrades Fund (CEUF), which provides co-funding for projects that help local governments make their facilities more energy efficient, cut their emissions, and reduce their energy bills.
