ABB’s new variable speed motor platform, the LV Titanium, combines a high-efficiency motor with a variable speed drive (VSD) to create a unified plug-and-play solution.

Designed for drop-in replacement of induction motors, the LV Titanium provides IE5 ultra-premium efficiency for pumps, compressors, fans and other applications, enabling cost savings, decreased energy consumption, and reduced carbon emissions.

More than just a drive attached to a motor, the LV Titanium has been engineered as an integrated solution, with a purpose-designed drive module optimising performance of a permanent magnet (PM) motor. On-site control is still possible, with an intuitive digital and analogue control panel, simple built-in PLC, and Modbus RTU communications connectivity.

The variable speed motor is designed to connect like a standard, fixed speed, direct-on-line motor, while providing all the benefits of a motor and drive package. Optimised and commissioned before shipment, the installation process for the LV Titanium is fast and easy, with reduced cabling by utilising existing power cables. The process is also safer and less costly, as the motor is lighter and no time needs to be spent on commissioning a separate VSD.

Purpose-built for customer requirements, the axial drive mounted on the end of the motor allows for vertical pump usage, whilst the high-power density allows the LV Titanium to be at least two frame sizes smaller than equivalent induction motors.

Widespread applications

Suitable for use in applications across segments such as water treatment, food and beverage, chemical processing and more, the LV Titanium meets a range of speed and torque requirements, including high torque at low speeds.

A variable speed motor provides operational benefits and energy savings, especially in installations where it may not be possible to add a separate drive. The built-in VSD allows for control over motor output speed and torque depending on the application, such as precise ramping up or down of speed to reduce mechanical stress in pumping.

Changing to an IE5 efficiency motor also leads to significant energy savings. In a 7.5kW centrifugal pump application, replacing the standard fixed speed motor with an IE5 variable speed motor lowered annual energy costs by over $4000 and reduced carbon emissions by 13,000kg.

Available from 1.5kW to 30kW and frame size 71 to 160, the LV Titanium has IP65 protection available, with IP55 as standard.

Other than standard off-the-shelf specifications, ABB can also customise the LV Titanium for specific application and site requirements. Combining efficiency and versatility into a compact design, the LV Titanium variable speed motor produces energy savings and reduces carbon emissions, helping industry future-proof operations.
