New water and sewage treatment plants nearing completion

The construction of the new Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Parkes Shire, New South Wales, are nearing completion.

Once completed, the new $40 million WTP will supply safe, secure and reliable water for the Parkes and Peak Hill communities, and will ensure that the towns continue to grow and attract new business and residents.

The new $30 million STP will replace the existing facility that was constructed in 1936, to deliver a reliable, robust and energy efficient sewage treatment for Parkes.

Parkes Shire Mayor, Ken Keith said, “We are delighted that these projects, which represent the largest works Council will undertake within the next 30 years, are nearing the finish line.

“I must thank the NSW Government for its significant contribution towards both projects, which will future proof these essential services to ensure Parkes is well positioned to accommodate the projected demand as our Shire continues to grow and attract new business and residents.”

Contractors at both sites are currently completing the internal fit out of the buildings, as well as the mechanical and electrical installations in preparation for commissioning.

Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis, said, “This is an exciting time for the staff and contractors on site, as well as the entire community, as we prepare to switch over to the new systems in the coming weeks.”

John Holland Project Manager, Peter Stark, said the team had enjoyed working on the projects over the 12 month period.

“We’re proud to have partnered with the Parkes Shire Council to deliver such a vital project for the local community. Now that the end of construction is drawing near, we are excited to see the final product and be able to hand it over for operations. It’s been a pleasure being involved in this project,” Mr Stark said.

The existing plants will be kept online for a brief period after the new plants become operational. Once the new plants have been fully integrated into the infrastructure system, the existing plants will be decommissioned after a period of one year with rehabilitation of the surrounding areas to be carried out in controlled stages.

The NSW Government contributed $18 million for the WTP and just over $9 million for the STP through the Country Towns Water Supply and Sewerage Program.
