A Queensland Urban Utilities project manager, Steve Gibson, has recently been named one of the best three in the world by the International Project Management Association (IPMA).

The winner will be announced at the IPMA World Conference in Panama from September 28 – 30.

Mr Gibson received the unprecedented accolade for his outstanding work upgrading the sewerage network at Woolloongabba.

The five year $82 million project is Queensland Urban Utilities’ biggest on record, and was delivered not only ahead of schedule but $3.7 million under budget.

Mr Gibson said he was incredibly proud to be the first Australian to make the top three for Project Manager of the Year in the 29 year history of the awards.

“I was judged against up to 70 top project managers from all over the globe, so hearing I’d made it down to the final three was an absolute thrill,” he said.

“I’ve been working in project management for more than a decade and this is far and away my number one career highlight.”

The accolade comes after Mr Gibson took out the Queensland, Australia and Asia Pacific titles.

“This award is the pinnacle of recognition in the industry on the world stage and reflects the achievements of everyone involved with the ‘Gabba’ project, he said.

“The project saw more than 5km of large trunk sewer mains installed, and will ensure the sewerage network caters for expected population growth.”

Mr Gibson is up against project managers from South Korea and Hungary.

“I can’t wait to mix with project managers from around the globe and even if I don’t win the award, top three in the world’s still pretty good.”
