Southern Rural Water has received an application from Alcoa for the pumping of groundwater to fill the closed Anglesea power station and mine as part of the final stages of the Rehabilitation and Closure Plan.
The key remaining aspect of the Draft Mine Rehabilitation and Closure Plan is an approved strategy to fill and maintain the mine pit with water. While Alcoa has investigated a range of potential options to support filling the mine pit in a timely manner, an approved strategy remained outstanding until recently.
Southern Rural Water refused Alcoa’s previous application to extend its groundwater licence in 2022 due to insufficient detail on the sustainability of the water resource, its impact on other users and the impact of groundwater on environmental values, including the Anglesea River.
Southern Rural Water said it will consider the groundwater application by Alcoa under a rigorous and transparent process, which will include the opportunity for the community to provide written submissions and to support those submissions at a public hearing.
Southern Rural Water is currently assessing whether the application has all the required information. If it is determined that it does, Southern Rural Water will provide the community and stakeholders with an opportunity to provide feedback.
All applications of this type are advertised publicly, and Southern Rural Water must consider and weigh issues raised by local communities and other interested parties.
Southern Rural Water is responsible for licensing and compliance and assessing and administering groundwater licences in southern Victoria.
