Tenders are now open for $1.5 billion of water efficiency projects in the Murray-Darling Basin which will deliver additional water for the environment with positive socio economic impacts.

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, David Littleproud, said the projects would deliver additional water savings without hurting Basin communities.

“This investment seeks 450 gigalitres of water which would be delivered with neutral or positive social and economic impacts,” Mr Littleproud said.

“The Murray–Darling Basin Water Infrastructure Program is a vital part of the plan to restore the health of the Murray–Darling Basin, while protecting Basin communities and their economies.”

Mr Littleproud said that the Federal Government is looking for businesses and organisations across the Basin that want to modernise their water infrastructure through off-farm, urban and industrial projects.

The program will also invite proposals for on-farm infrastructure projects in Queensland, South Australia and the ACT.

“We’ve listened to feedback on past water infrastructure programs and we will make sure that all funded projects leave Basin communities no worse off,” Mr Littleproud said.

“We are starting the recovery of this water now, with infrastructure funding to continue through to 2024.”

He also said that the program will help meet remaining in-catchment targets by using the Sustainable Rural Water Use and Infrastructure Program funds.

“The Murray–Darling Basin Plan is working and I am determined to make sure we stay on track to deliver the best possible outcomes for Basin communities while also protecting the environment.”
