Albury City has announced that it will be working with NSW Public Works to undertake a significant upgrade to the city’s main sewer pump station and rising mains. This upgrade is essential to ensure that the existing network can adequately cater to the needs of the growing population and planned development in the area.

At a recent council meeting, councillors voted to approve a $4.9 million contract for design and construction supervision services, which is a crucial first step before the larger construction phase.

The main sewer pump station, positioned at the corner of Smollett St and Wodonga Place, is responsible for collecting and pumping 95 per cent of all sewage flows in Albury to the wastewater treatment plants at Kremur St and Waterview. Remarkably, the station was originally constructed in 1916 and currently serves as part of the council’s main works depot.

The ambitious project aims to construct a new pump station and rehabilitate the existing one. This will significantly enhance the storage and pumping capacity at the site, increasing it from 1,100 to 3,000 litres per second. Furthermore, the project includes plans to lay new sewer pipelines to the wastewater treatment plants and upgrade the existing lines.

Service Leader Waste and Wastewater, Brad Willis, emphasised the critical nature of the upgrade, explaining that due to the high volume of sewage flowing through the pump station, it cannot be taken out of service or relocated during the upgrade process.

“The pump station is now in need of significant upgrading to ensure it meets Albury’s current and future needs,” Mr Willis said. “Accordingly, this project seeks to enhance the pump station’s capacity while simultaneously allowing it to continue servicing our growing city.”

The completion date for the overall project is September 2027.
