Goulburn Mulwaree Council has awarded the construction contract for an upgrade of the Goulburn Wastewater Treatment Plant in Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales.

Haslin Constructions will complete the upgrade which was driven by the need to ensure sewer discharge meets environmental standards and future population growth projections.

The current treatment plant was constructed in 1918 and an upgrade will have positive environmental impacts and mean the council irrigation farm on Taralga Road would no longer be required.

Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor, Bob Kirk, said he was looking forward to the beginning of construction on the project.

“We are taking on an ambitious capital works program over the coming years to provide the infrastructure for future growth in Goulburn Mulwaree,” Mr Kirk said.

“The wastewater treatment plant upgrade is a key part of this program, and will accommodate for significant increases in population.

“The upgrade will achieve fantastic environmental outcomes, including the ability to provide a reuse product for irrigation on sporting fields and parkland throughout the area – this product will also be available to potential customers in the future.”

Construction is expected to begin before Christmas 2016 and be complete in December 2017.
