Upgrades to the Karratha WWTP in Western Australia are now complete. The upgrades have been carried out as part of the WA State Government’s $113 million wastewater scheme to increase the amount of wastewater being recycled at the plant.
WA Water Minister, Mia Davies, said projects completed included a major upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant near the light industrial area, new pipelines and upgrades to wastewater pump stations.
“The wastewater treatment plant has been upgraded to be able to treat up to 10 million litres of wastewater per day,” Ms Davies said.
“The plant’s recycling facility has the capacity to produce up to six million litres of high-quality recycled water each day, which can be used to irrigate public open space, ovals and schools.”
More than 18 kilometres of new pipeline was constructed from Falcon Parade along Balmoral, Searipple and Millstream roads, to transfer wastewater to the upgraded treatment plant. The Water Corporation also upgraded the pump station on Falcon Parade and built a new pump station on Searipple Road.
The projects benefited from contributions from the $104.4 million Pilbara Essential Services Royalties for Regions funding.
WA Regional Development Minister, Terry Redman, said the projects would support growth and create attractive and sustainable community amenities.
“The upgrades will accommodate strong population growth and create inviting areas of green space for community use – a key part of the Pilbara Cities initiative,” Mr Redman said.
The final project to be completed is a $5.7 million pipeline and pump station on Bathgate and Balmoral roads. This project is expected to begin in mid to late 2015 and be completed in early 2016.
