The Board of Lower Murray Water (LMW) has announced the appointment of a new Managing Director, following a six month, nationwide recruitment process.

Anthony Couroupis will take on the role, bringing extensive water industry and catchment management experience, having worked in the sector for the past 20 years.

Mr Couroupis spent over six years as General Manager of irrigation company Murray Irrigation Limited, which was during the millennium drought and a period of significant water reform.

During his time with Murray Irrigation Limited, Mr Couroupis oversaw the delivery of significant water use efficiency capital works programs, while contributing to state and national water policy.

Mr Couroupis currently works for Adelaide based SA Water in pricing strategy.

LMW Chair, Cheryl Rix, said that Mr Couroupis grew up in Mildura and still has strong family connections in the region.

“Anthony started his career in the dried fruits industry, later working with Western Murray Irrigation and the NSW Murray Catchment Management Authority,” Ms Rix said.

“This combination of local knowledge and industry insight will be invaluable to LMW. Anthony’s understanding of River Murray operations and the Murray Darling Basin Plan is important in working with agencies to maintain water deliverability to the Sunraysia region.

“The LMW Board has set a clear direction to continue to provide water services in a cost effective, reliable and timely manner.

“LMW must deliver outcomes to our community by catering for sustained population growth in our urban business and promoting efficient horticultural growth in our rural business.

“This is an excellent appointment for LMW, with Anthony the right person to come into the business at this time to progress many of the initiatives already underway, and to meet the many challenges the business and our region faces in the longer term,” Ms Rix said.

Mr Couroupis commences as Managing Director on 1 July 2019, with David Girdwood continuing as interim Managing Director until that time.
