Cairns Regional Council has announced that $2.2 million will be allocated for upgrading essential components of the Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant, including new dewatering equipment.
At present, there is no redundancy for the existing dewatering system and if it failed, the plant could only operate for about two weeks without potentially jeopardising its environmental licence compliance.
The works will also include modifications and replacement of the polymer dosing system, which is needed to prepare wastewater for treatment; a new control system and switchboard; and a new building to accommodate the new equipment.
Hydroflux Epco has been awarded a $1.9 million contract for the works, which are due to be completed in June 2024.
