A remediation project to modernise and improve sewage service outcomes in Queenstown’s West Coast is underway, including this installation of an automatic sieve screen and establishing jet aeration.

The Queenstown Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is approximately 700m south-west of the town and has been operational for 35 years.

TasWater’s Capital Delivery Office (CDO) Senior Project Manager, Amanda Allen, said the plant was vital to the Queenstown community and that it was time for remediation.

“The facilities at the plant that screen waste need upgrading, in addition to the aeration capabilities which help reduce odour at the site and are a vital part of the treatment process,” Ms Allen said.

The scope of the project includes installing an automatic sieve screen to filter out non-flushable items such as wet wipes and sanitary items before treatment, and establishing jet aeration in the aeration tank which assists with the treatment process.

In addition, remediation works are being undertaken to the existing concrete aeration tank and the installation of a new switchboard, to ensure the technology used at the site meets modern standards.

The project is on track for completion by June 2022.

Local West Coast business GBE Engineering, based in Zeehan, and Tasmanian-owned RBD Electrical are the main contractors undertaking the works.

The Queenstown STP remediation works is just one of many projects TasWater’s CDO is undertaking across the state, providing improved water and sewerage services and environmental outcomes to regional Tasmanians.

“We started these works in late March and they are progressing well,” Ms Allen said.

“Once complete, the project will help ensure the Queenstown STP meets modern standards and can service the community for years to come.”
