Construction on a major water main replacement project will soon begin in Niddrie in Melbourne’s inner west.
The project will be delivered by John Holland-KBR Joint Venture and will ensure that safe and reliable drinking water services will continue throughout the area.
Built in 1928, the M102 water main is one of three water mains that services about 125,000 homes and businesses in Melbourne’s inner city and western suburbs.
The water main needs to be replaced to ensure it continues to provide optimal performance, without leaks and bursts, and to service future demand for the next 150 years.
Melbourne Water Project Manager, Paul Jackson, said works would start at the eastern end of Grandview Road in Niddrie, and move south via the Melbourne Water-owned pipe track from Hamilton Road.
“We are replacing a total of 6.6km of water main between Treadwell Road, Niddrie and Tottenham Railway Station, West Footscray over the next seven months,” said Mr Jackson.
“There will be some changed traffic conditions in local areas, to ensure work is undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible.”
Mr Jackson said work would move in 100m sections and in some areas, to minimise impact to busy thoroughfares, new pipe will be pushed through the old pipe using a technique called slip lining.
Additionally, to improve project efficiency and minimise impact to the community there will be several construction sites working at once.
